Mandei Benzer meu berimbau – Mestre Barrão

Not just a song with a video clip of the words - this is actually a capoeira music video!! made by capoeiristas, for capoeiristas. The song is included in the latest CD of the group Axé Capoeira, "Axé Capoeira vol 7: É o som que me leva", produced by Mestre Barrão

This song tells us about a superstition and custom in capoeira. It is believed that the breaking of the arame while someone is playing the berimbau is an omen of bad luck, thus the berimbau needs to be blessed to turn the evil. Some mestres even stop a roda if three arames are broken so as to avoid possible accidents in the game. This video clip features a capoeirista who is taking his berimbau to a chapel to get it blessed and turn the bad luck away.
So here is the clip. enjoy:

PORTUGUES

mandei,

eu levei meu berimbau, numa capela pra benzer,
e pedir para sao bento do mal vim me proteger,

eu pedi pra sao bento, benzer
eu pedi pra sao bento, guardar
eu pedi pra sao bento, benzer
meu berimbau eu vou tocar

ENGLISH

I asked,
I asked to bless, I asked to bless my berimbau in the chapel

I was playing my berimbau, when the wire broke.
it was sign of bad thing, but I didn't want to believe,
every time I was playing the berimbau, the wire broke.
I took my berimbau, in a chapel to bless,
and to ask from Sao Bento from evil to protect me,

I asked from Sao Bento, to bless
I asked from Sao Bento, to guard
I asked from Sao Bento, to bless
my berimbau I will play
